Katsushika Hokusai, Japanese, 1760 To 1849, Antique Edo Period Ukiyo E Color Woodblock Print On Kozo Paper, Portrait Of Shuten-Doji Of Mount Oe From Manga Vol 10. Circa, Early 19th Century. Inscribed With Calligraphy In The Print, Upper Right. Matted. The "Demon-Slaying" Theme, Exemplified By This Painting, Was Explained In Detail In Episode 307 In July 2021. The "Demons" Are Not The Kind Depicted In Illustrations Of Momotaro, With Horns, Wearing Red Or Blue Loincloths, And Wielding Iron Clubs, But Rather Represent "Human Embodiments Of Evil," As Indicated By The Underlined Phrase "A Devilish Person." Hokusai Manga Supports This Interpretation By Including A Portrait Of Shuten-Doji Of Mount Oe. Shuten Doji, Is A Mythical Oni Or Demon Leader Of Japan, Who According To Legend Was Killed By The Hero Minamoto No Raiko. Although Decapitated, The Demon's Detached Head Still Took A Bite At The Hero, Who Avoided Death By Wearing Multiple Helmets Stacked On His Head. Shuten-Doji Had His Lair At Mount Oe, Northwest Of The City Of Kyoto, Or Mount Ibuki, Depending On The Version. It Has Also Been Theorized That The Original Mountain Was Mount Oe On The Western Edge Of The City Of Kyoto. Antique Asian And Oriental Graphic Art Prints And Collectibles.
